Resume vs CV: what to use in different countries
Resume and CV can describe similar documents, but their meaning changes by country and profession. The job advertisement is always the final authority; this guide gives you a reliable starting point.
The short answer
For most jobs, use the term the employer uses. If the advertisement says “resume,” submit a resume. If it says “CV,” submit a CV. When it says neither, local practice can help you choose the label, but the document should still be tailored to that particular role.
How resume and CV meanings differ
In the United States and Canada, a resume is normally a concise document for general employment. A CV is often a longer record used for academic, scientific, medical, and research applications.
In the United Kingdom, South Africa, and much of Europe, CV is the normal term for the concise document used to apply for ordinary jobs. Australia, India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines may use resume and CV with some overlap.
Resume or CV by country
| Country | Common term | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Resume | Use a concise resume for most private- and public-sector jobs. CV usually means a longer academic, research, medical, or teaching record. |
| Canada | Resume | Resume is the usual term for general employment. Academic and research applications may request a CV. |
| United Kingdom | CV | CV is the standard term for most job applications. It is usually a concise career summary rather than a complete academic history. |
| India | Resume or CV | Both terms are widely used. Follow the job advertisement and keep the document focused on the role. |
| Bangladesh | CV or resume | Employers use both terms. Match the wording in the vacancy and provide the exact information requested. |
| Australia | Resume | Resume is common for general employment. Some employers also use CV, so the advertisement should decide the label. |
| Philippines | Resume | Resume is common for private-sector roles, while some organizations request a more detailed CV or personal data sheet. |
| South Africa | CV | CV is the usual term. Government and regulated applications may also require official forms or supporting documents. |
| Germany | CV or Lebenslauf | Applications commonly request a CV or Lebenslauf. Use the language and format named by the employer. |
| Spain | CV or currículum | CV and currículum are common terms. Europass may be useful when requested, but it is not required for every employer. |
When a US-style CV is different
An academic CV may include publications, presentations, research, grants, teaching, professional memberships, and other scholarly work. It can be several pages long because completeness matters.
Do not send a long academic CV to a US employer that requested a resume unless the position or instructions clearly call for it.
Should you use Europass?
Europass is a recognized European CV format and can be useful for cross-border, education, training, or public-sector applications. It is not automatically required for every job in Germany, Spain, or elsewhere in Europe. Use it when the employer, institution, or application system requests it.
What stays the same everywhere
- Follow the document type and file format requested in the advertisement.
- Show the most relevant experience, education, skills, licenses, and certifications clearly.
- Use keywords only when they accurately describe your background.
- Keep job titles, employers, locations, and dates consistent.
- Check local expectations before including a photo or sensitive personal information.
- Proofread the document and confirm that its text can be selected after saving.
A safe rule for international applications
Keep a detailed master career document, then create a shorter version for each application. Change the label to resume or CV according to the employer's wording, but also adjust the content so the most relevant evidence appears first.
